The Roanoke Logperch is an endagered species of fish that can reach 5-6 inches long. They are only found in the Dan River, Mayo River and Smith River Waterheads. The original Lindsey Bridge Dam that was at the curent Madison River Park would not let allow fish to swim upstream. With the new waterfall system at the park, the fish can now go upstream further up the river. And thanks to this endangered species in the area, grants were provided to pay for the new Madison River Park.
